Burley-in-Wharfedale tenant celebrates centenary

5 September 2009

Sarah Piotrowski – known as ‘Louie’ to her friends – celebrated her 100th birthday on 5 September with an ‘open house’ for family, friends and neighbours.

Louie was born in Hunslet, Leeds and moved to Otley in 1935 with her then husband Frank Yates. They had two sons Peter and James. Frank sadly died in 1951.

In 1958 she married Tadeusz Piotrowski who came to the area from Poland.

For many years, Louie helped out one day a week at Menston Hall in Menston, at the time a Council-run sheltered home for older people, before becoming its resident warden in 1967. She retired in 1974 after a very happy time working there and moved to her current home at Grange Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Louie still keeps active and has a busy social life. She does her own weekly shopping in the village and never misses going to church.

To make her birthday that extra bit special Louie has just returned to a new-look home, which includes a smart new kitchen and bathroom. It is one of 130 village homes being modernised by Bullock Construction for Incommunities as part of the housing group’s £1.8 million modernisation programme in the area.

Incommunities arranged respite accommodation for Louie close by whilst her home was being transformed.

Zabair Rasul, Director of Incommunities – aire-wharfe office said: “On behalf of everyone at Incommunities our congratulations to this very special lady on her 100th birthday.

“We were particularly delighted that Mrs Piotrowski was able to enjoy her very special day in her newly modernised home surrounded by family and friends.”

Zabair Rasul, Director of Incommunities – aire-wharfe presented Mrs Piotrowski with a large bouquet of flowers on behalf of everyone at the housing group.
