Media Release from Keighley Cougars RLFC

1 December 2008

Cougars sign up for community partnership.

Keighley Cougars have teamed up with Incommunities – the district’s biggest social housing landlord - to deliver an important new community Rugby League programme in Keighley during 2009.

Incommunities owns and manages 22,000 homes across the Bradford district and their new partnership with the Cougars is aimed at delivering the Rugby League experience to youngsters on estates in Keighley, Airedale and the Wharfe Valley.

The partnership is being supported through Incommunities trust loyalty card (tlc) scheme which offers its tenants savings and discounts in shops and local attractions. Membership is free and aims to reward good tenants.

The partnership programme will include a community fitness programme that will be fronted by a new version of the club’s furry mascot, Freddie Cougar. It will last for twelve months and is part of an extensive community programme being undertaken by the Cougars.

Helen Carter, the Cougars’ General Manager, said: “We are delighted to form this new partnership with Incommunities because we share the same values of putting the needs of our customers first, equality and provision of opportunities for all.

“We’re taking a proactive approach to our community activity programmes and this partnership is going to be one of our keystone activities during 2009.

“This scheme will enable us to introduce more young people in our part of West Yorkshire to Rugby League and, at the same time, make a meaningful contribution to the well being of the district’s young people”.

Zabair Rasul, Director of Incommunities’ aire-wharfe office, said: “We’re really excited about working with the Keighley Cougars to promote the Rugby League experience in our communities.

“Working more closely with young people to meet their needs is a key goal for everyone at Incommunities - aire-wharfe. Our support for this programme aims to encourage young people to develop their rugby skills, promote fitness and health and give everyone a sporting chance. You never know we might find a Cougars star of the future!

“This partnership is just the start of a range of community-based activities we are planning to bring young people together and enrich their lives.”

The Rugby League partnership will be delivered in Keighley estates, including Bracken Bank, Guardhouse, Braithwaite and Parkwood Rise area. It will also cover Bingley, Denholme, Ilkley and the Wharfe Valley.

Each of the sessions will see a group of young people introduced to the basic skills of Rugby League as well as healthy lifestyles.

During the 2009 season all tlc members with Incommunities will receive £1 off each match day ticket and 10 per cent off prices at the Cougars’ club shop on production of their tlc card.
