Team effort helps clean up Keighley estate

8 October 2008

A two day clean-up on the Bracken Bank estate has been hailed a big success.

On Friday and Saturday (3-4 October) Incommunities’ estate and support services teams joined forces with the South Keighley Streets Ahead programme to organise the community clean up. Bradford Council’s Clean Teams and the Probation Service also helped tidy up open spaces and litter ‘hot spots’ on the estate.

Local children and residents also helped with the clean-up and Incommunities’ construction partners Lovell kindly provided several skips to collect up the rubbish.

Residents were asked to put out their bulky refuse such as old mattresses and furniture for collection. Staff from Incommunities aire-wharfe office and Streets Ahead wardens gave out information to households to encourage everyone to keep their gardens tidy. They also provided information on local household waste recycling centres and bulk collection services.

Zabair Rasul, Director of Incommunities – aire-wharfe office said: “The clean up was a big success and over 20 tonnes of rubbish was taken away over the two days.

“As a caring and responsible landlord we are committed to working with residents and local partners to keep neighbourhoods and estates tidy.

“A big thank you to everyone who helped, in particular local youngsters who joined in. I know from carrying an estate walkabout following the clean-up that that there has been a real improvement in the estate’s appearance. It shows that by working together we can make a difference and make our estates and communities cleaner and greener places to live.”

Coun Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Culture, said: “This shows what a difference can be made if the whole community works together to tackle environmental issues in their area.

“In the lead-up to Bonfire Night, it is more important than ever to clear up piles of rubbish and to dispose of litter responsibly to prevent nuisance fires.”

Bracken Bank Community Association provided refreshments and a base at the local community centre throughout the clean-up.
