foundation funding for Lower Grange community courses

26 January 2009

A busy community group is launching a range of free education, life skills and healthy living classes for local people with the help of nearly £30,000 of Incommunities funding.

The Lower Grange Community Association is hoping residents across West Bradford will make signing up th eir new year’s resolution and learn new skills.

The project called the Lower Grange Bite Size programme will include courses in arts and crafts, cookery, basic English and Maths, exercise and fitness, first aid, food hygiene, IT learning and good parenting.

The courses will be run at the Lower Grange Community Centre at Chaffinch Road and the first one in basic computing is already fully booked!

The basic computing, food hygiene and parenting courses started last week.

As part of the Bite Size programme, a Citizens Advice information point is also being set up to give people easy access to local services and an advice worker.

The programme was drawn up by the community association following consultation with local residents and last month their plans were backed by Incommunities Foundation – the housing group’s charitable arm set up to support community-led ventures.

Alex Dilger, Community Development Worker at the Lower Grange Community Association said: “Everyone at the association is committed to developing local facilities and creating opportunities for local people to build a better quality of life for themselves.

“With the support of Incommunities we are starting to deliver a range of free activities and training which aims to improve peoples’ education and employment skills, promote healthy living and improve their access to local service. The program targets skill gaps identified by local people and provides a pathway to making lasting improvements to their lives.”

Angela Ansell from Incommunities Foundation Board said: “I am delighted that Foundation is supporting this exciting community project which is aimed at supporting people and overcoming barriers in their lives.
