housing group building future jobs

26 April 2010

Over 50 young people are being given valuable work opportunities with Incommunities under a new jobs programme.

They are part of the national Future Jobs Fund which encourages local employers to give unemployed people aged 18-24 years old experience of work.

The young people are working in a range of jobs at Incommunities including office work, environmental work and caretaking.

The positions last for six months and offer recruits valuable work experience. In addition, the Future Jobs Fund provides them with a weekly wage.

Incommunities is creating around 150 jobs under the scheme over the next 18 months. These are through both the national and local strands of the Future Jobs Fund scheme.

The housing group’s specialist employment service – open field – is playing a key role in managing the local job opportunities. This includes providing the young people with a package of support at work including assigning them a personal staff mentor. The open field team also provide one to one support to help them access the jobs market.

Steve Short, Director of Incommunities with responsibility for running the Future Jobs Fund across the housing group, said: “This is a fabulous scheme and Incommunities is delighted to be a key partner in it. It is a privilege to have the chance of influencing the life chances of young people across the district through the world of work.

“We are already getting a lot of positive feedback from our young starters and hopefully we can offer them a successful pathway into new careers and the jobs market.”

Danny Moulden joined Incommunities as an environmental operative in January 2010 and is delighted with his work opportunity. He said: “I work with one of the estate teams and it’s the best job I’ve had. I love working outdoors and this has given me a good idea of what I want to do as a career.”

Zarmina Khan is gaining work experience in Incommunities’ HR department and said: “The work is really varied and I get a lot of support from other staff who are really friendly. The experience will really help me develop my career.”
