Housing staff go back to school to run construction taster day

2 November 2009

Young budding builders from Windhill CofE Primary School will this week get a taster of what it’s like to work in construction with the help of Incommunities.

The careers day (6th November) for Year 6 children is being organised and hosted by the housing group’s propertysolutions service at their nearby Shipley base. It will include fun team challenges such as building a paper tower and also the chance to meet young trade apprentices.

To round off the day, the youngsters will have a go at different building skills in a specially set up workshop ‘rig’ in their school hall. The practical session will be closely supervised by experienced trades men and women from propertysolutions.

The event will also help celebrate ‘National Take Over Day’ which encourages children and young people to find out more about the world of work by spending time with businesses, councils and other organisations.

propertysolutions work closely with local primary and upper schools to encourage young people to find out more about careers in construction. Last year (October) they staged a big careers event called ‘Women into Construction’ which was attended by over 250 female and male students aged 12 to 17 years old.

Delroy Beverley, Director of Incommunities – propertysolutions said: “We are all looking forward to giving the youngsters a practical insight into working in construction.

“We hope it will stimulate the children’s interest and awareness of the many career opportunities in the sector, particularly as they get ready to move into upper school.

“The taster day is one of many careers events we have run in schools for children and teachers as part of our ‘playground to the boardroom’ campaign.

“As a major equal opportunities employer we want to show that the construction sector is open to all.”

Gill Burgess, Head teacher at Windhill CofE Primary School said: “We are delighted that staff from Incommunities are sharing their expertise with our Year 6 children. Hopefully, it will encourage the children to learn about the construction industry and possibly think about it as a career.”
