Keighley kitchen project gets underway

20 February 2012

Incommunities, Bradford Council and its partners are teaming up to transform an under used kitchen into a smart new catering facility run by local people.

Work is underway to give the kitchen at Keighley Cougars’ Stadium a modern re-fit including installing new units, cooker, storage space and new tiling and decorating.

The new look kitchen will be run by the Keighley-based drug and alcohol charity Project 6. It will provide a valuable training resource for adults and young people who are on the road to recovery from substance mis-use and want to get back into employment.

The catering refurbishment is being co-ordinated by Your Sporting Chance and Incommunities. The work is being carried out by Davric Construction and Howdens of Keighley who have provided a lot of the fittings.

Funding towards the re-fit is coming from Bradford Council’s Keighley Area Committee.

Ellie McNeil from Project 6 said: “The new facility will be run as a social enterprise. It will provide a valuable opportunity for adults in recovery. This new venture will help people to build social capital and work towards becoming job ready.

“All of our volunteers will receive support and training and as part of that they will help to provide catering on match days for supporters, officials and players.”

Mary Calvert from Your Sporting Chance (YSC) said: “This exciting project builds on YSC’s innovative work to engage with young people and help them overcome barriers in their lives and learn new skills.

“Thanks to the support of Incommunities, the Council and local businesses, volunteers with Project 6 will be given the opportunity to follow a successful path into work.”

Coun Dorothy Clamp, Chairman of the Keighley Area Committee, said: “We are really keen to support initiatives that promote self reliance, especially in young people.

“We hope this scheme will provide a supportive environment that enables participants to develop their potential and give them a taste of working life.”

Coun Khadim Hussain, Keighley Central ward member, said: “This project gives people turning their life around valuable help towards entering employment and therefore benefits the individuals involved and the wider Keighley community.”
