Removing someone from your tenancy

Removing a joint tenant from your tenancy or passing your tenancy to another member of your household is called assignment.

Assignment is when you transfer your tenancy to someone else. The new tenant takes over your legal interest in the property and becomes the tenant. All the original tenancy terms, including rent, apply to the new tenant and us as the housing association.

When can you assign your tenancy?

  • Mutual exchange: Swapping homes with another tenant.

  • Court Order: A legal decision that requires the assignment.

  • Changing a joint tenancy to a sole tenancy.

  • Signing a sole tenancy over to a household member who would inherit the tenancy if you passed away.

Important points

  • Only one assignment is allowed per tenancy.

  • After assigning your tenancy and moving out, you cannot apply for alternative social housing.

  • If you would like to make an application to assign your tenancy you need to complete an application form.

  • You can request this form by calling 0330 175 9540 or by contacting us.
