Tackling tenancy fraud and empty homes

We want our homes to be lived in by the people who really need them. That's why we take action against tenancy fraud and abandoned homes.

Tenancy fraud can include:

  • Renting out your home without our permission

  • Giving false information to get a home

  • Trying to take over a tenancy you're not entitled to

  • Selling or passing on your keys for money

If we find out about possible fraud or an abandoned home, we'll look into it carefully.

We may:

  • Try to contact the customer that we rent the home to

  • Work with partners if we're worried about someone's safety

  • Take legal action if the home isn't being lived in by the right person

We also work to stop tenancy fraud before it starts by:

  • Checking photo ID and details on applications

  • Visiting homes to make sure the right people live there

If you think someone might be committing tenancy fraud, please let us know - every report helps us make sure homes go to those who need them most.
