Aids and adaptations

We understand how important it is for you to be able to get around your home and remain safe and independent for as long as possible. If you or someone living with you has a disability or a mobility issue you may need your home adapted to help you carry out day to day activities.

We advise applicants to contact Bradford Council on 01274 435400 ask for an Occupational Therapy assessment.

The Occupational Therapy service can help people who are having difficulties in the home. The service works with people by looking at problem solving solutions, exploring equipment or considering adaptations to your home.

The service is aimed at people who have trouble in tasks like getting in and out of the bath or going up and down stairs. This service is provided by Bradford Council and partner health services.

Our adaptations can range from minor works such as a grab rail or step alteration, to major adaptations, such as a wetroom, stairlift or a ramp for a wheelchair user. We’ll work closely with you and your Occupational Therapist to find the options that best suit you.

We provide funding for some adaptations and will help you to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant from your Local Authority where applicable.

There can be a high demand for adaptations and it may be necessary to add you to a waiting list especially if the works are complex.

Adaptations do not include the following work:

  • Ramps/access alterations/storage and charging for mobility scooters. You should always consider how you will do this before you purchase a scooter.
  • Sound insulation, double glazing and central heating
  • Provision of driveways for Motability cars, including to facilitate electric charging.
