Installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Point at your home

Are you thinking about buying an electric vehicle (EV) and don’t have an EV charger at your home? We’ve pulled some information together which outlines the conditions that need to be met, to have a charger installed, and how to apply for permission.

Before you apply

There are 3 conditions that need to be met to have the charger installed at your home:

  1. Your home must have a paved (or tarmac) driveway and not one that is gravel or grassed. Your driveway also needs to have a dropped curb which isn’t accessible by anyone else.

  2. The charger must be installed by a government-approved EV ChargePoint grant installer and an Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) approved contractor. For a list of approved contractors and installers, head to the government website.

  3. The installer must be certified by the NICEIC or an equivalent governing body.

How to apply

Once you have met the conditions, you can then apply for permission from us:

  1. Contact your Neighbourhood Housing Officer and ask for a Consent Request Form.

  2. Complete the form and gather the following supporting information:
    • Details of the contractor who is going to be installing the charge point.
    • A quote for the cost of the installation on a letterhead
    • A layout plan showing the work area and proposed charger location
    • Details of the make, model and work description
    • The design of the installation including loading of existing supply.

3.    Hand your application and supporting documents to your NHO or send it to them via email or post.

What happens next?

We’ll review your application, and in about a month after you’ve submitted it, you will hear from us.

What to do after the installation

Please send us the Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC) and Part P electrical certificates. The company should provide these to you once the work is complete but if they don’t please ask for them. We will keep these on our records and it is really important that we receive these certificates. If we don’t receive them, it can result in disconnection and any associated costs being charged to you.

At the end of your tenancy with us the charger, cabling and associated equipment must stay as part of the electrical installation at the property.

Extra information

There are some other things to think about when organising for the charger to be installed at your home;

  • Work must not go ahead until permission has been granted by us.

  • If any upgrades are needed to the electrics in your home, to have the charger installed this will need to be organised and paid for by you.

  • Check that the company you have chosen have Public and Employer’s Liability Insurance. This information should be readily available, from them, but if it isn’t clear you can ask them to confirm that they have it.

  • The work carried out needs to meet BS 7671 and Part P regulations. To check that the work will meet these standards please ask the company that are carrying out the installation

  • The installation must take place within 3 months of permission being given.

  • It is not possible to fix charging pods to certain types of external wall insulation. Damage to certain types of external wall insulation could cause damp, mould or condensation in your home. Speak to the company installing the charger if you would like any more information about this.

  • The charger must not damage the property’s structure. If any repairs are needed, to the property’s structure, these will be paid for by you.

Retrospective Permission

If you’ve had a charger installed, without permission from us, you will need to apply for retrospective approval. If you don’t apply for retrospective approval it may result in the removal of the charger and any costs to repair your home will be charged to you.

Please speak to your Neighbourhood Officer about applying for retrospective approval.
