Over 30 people are currently being supported. They include tenants who have left school without any qualifications and are now taking Level 1 and 2 NVQ qualifications in English and maths.

The sessions are open to anyone aged 16 and over and run by Nicki Woods from the housing group’s Community Resilience Team. Nicki has over 20 years’ experience teaching in the community.

Nicki said: “The training is very flexible and tailored to the needs of each learner.

"You can choose to follow an accredited training pathway or come along to learn basic maths and English at your own pace.

"In some cases attendees want to pursue a qualification that can help them get a job or go to college and sometimes someone might come along so they can help their children with their homework.

"The training and outcomes are really up to the learner."

Casey (18) from Ravenscliffe goes along with her mum to a maths course at the Gateway Centre. She said: "I get one-to-one support when I go which is really helping me build my confidence.

"I didn’t do any exams at school but I am hoping to change that through this course."

Carla from Woodside attends maths and English classes at the Sandale Centre and said: "The classes are really helping me and I can fit them around my work in childcare.

"Nicki helps me every week to further my skills and get the qualifications I need to develop."

Ravenscliffe tenant Tracy attends maths and English classes and said: "I’m 44 years old and I want to improve my skills as things have changed since my school days!"

Anna Fryer, Director of Incommunities – Neighbourhoods, said: "These maths and English courses run by Nicki and the team are having a huge impact and equipping people with the skills to find work, access training and improve their lives.

"It is another example of how Incommunities is much more than just a landlord and is making a positive difference in other ways in our communities.

"If you would like to join one of our free courses simply pop along to one of our partner centres."
