Kayleigh spreads the good news in newspaper competition

Kayleigh - good news competition winner
Kayleigh Walker from Windhill is among the winners of a fabulous ‘good news’ competition run for children living in the Shipley area.

The free competition invited youngsters to share feel positive stories during lockdown by creating their own newspaper.

Incommunities joined a host of local businesses in supporting the community initiative. They included Paul Binns Quality Meats butchers, Serendipity Interiors and Salts Pots Ceramic Studio.
Kayleigh’s colourful newspaper included a look at some of the activities run at Windhill Community Centre and other things happening in the BD18 area. It won her a £25 gift card donated by the Shipley-based housing group.

The BD18 Good News competition was the idea of local resident Sophie Eveleigh who works for Better Start Bradford. The brief was simple – make your own newspaper and fill it with news that will make people smile.

Sophie said: "I wanted to encourage kids entering to think about the many positive things happening in these difficult times and show their creative side.
"The competition’s been a wonderful experience with over 20 entries coming in. It’s been great fun reading through each one and I want to share many of the stories with residents in local care homes and people that are having to self isolate.
"A big thank you to businesses, like Incommunities, who generously donated prizes and gave the youngster’s that little extra incentive to create their newspapers.
Kayleigh (12) said: “It was great writing about the activities at the centre and spreading some good news about the area I live in."

Geraldine Howley, Incommunities’ Group Chief Executive said: "The lockdown has been a tough time for everyone so it’s extra special when you hear about special competitions like this that have proved such a hit with local kids.
"A big well done to Kayleigh and all the young people that entered the competition. Sophie deserves her own prize for coming up with such an inspiring idea. It’s just what we need at this time."
