Village Society in remembrance garden display

Rembrance display at Crossflatts

Crossflatts Village Society, supported by Incommunities, have laid a memorial garden display to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Following an approach from the village society earlier this year the housing group agreed to support the display on a communal area by Lime Court flats, next to Keighley Road.

This week a team of Incommunities’ gardeners and Crossflatts Village Society (CVS) volunteers have made the plot which was subsequently planted with red flowers by the village society bearing the figure ‘100’.

The garden will be maintained by CVS members and they plan to place a memorial stone and poppy seeds in the coming months.

Tim Meggitt, Chair of Crossflatts Village Society said: “We are pleased to have worked with Incommunities to create this memorial for the local community.

"A number of Crossflatts people lost their lives during the Great War and we wanted to honour everyone’s sacrifice as Remembrance Day approaches. It is particularly fitting as we come together for the Armistice centenary.

"We are planning to plant more flowers including poppies in the New Year and are exploring the possibility of a permanent memorial such as an engraved stone honouring those who died serving their country.

"We would like to thank the garden team and housing officer, James Quigley, who supported our efforts."

Geraldine Howley, Incommunities Group Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to have supported the Crossflatts Village Society in helping create this memorial space.

"The society’s initiative is a lovely fitting tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and hopefully it will serve as a lasting community landmark for local people."
